SASSA Status Check 2026: Check Your SRD Grant Online
A plain-English guide to checking your SRD grant status, understanding the result, and fixing the most common problems — with links only to the official government channels.
To check or manage your SRD grant, use the official South African government portal. This site does not collect your ID number, phone number, or any personal details.
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za You are leaving this independent information site. sassastatascheck.co.za is not SASSA and is not part of the South African government.Welcome to SASSA Status Check, an independent guide that helps South Africans check their SRD grant status, understand what the result means, and take the right next step. We are not affiliated with SASSA, the Department of Social Development, or any government department. We publish clear instructions and point you to the official channels so you can act safely. The only valid website to manage your Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is srd.sassa.gov.za. Many people mistype the address as "srd.sassa.gove.za" or add extra characters — always double-check the spelling to avoid scam sites.
What is the SRD R350 / R370 grant?
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant supports eligible South Africans who are unemployed and experiencing financial hardship. It began as a R350 monthly payment and increased to R370 in 2025. The grant is administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) under the Department of Social Development. An important detail many applicants miss: your status is reassessed every month. Even after you are approved once, each new month is evaluated again against income and eligibility checks, so it is normal for a status to change from month to month.
How to check your SASSA SRD status (all methods)
You can check your SRD status through several official channels. Use whichever is easiest for you — all of them lead back to the same government record.
1. Official website
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za, enter your South African ID number and the mobile number you used to apply, and complete the OTP (one-time PIN) sent to your phone. You will then see your status for each month, marked Approved, Pending, or Declined, along with a pay date when a payment has been scheduled.
2. WhatsApp
SASSA operates an official WhatsApp line for grant queries. Save the official number published on sassa.gov.za, send a message, and follow the menu prompts. Never send your OTP or PIN to anyone.
3. USSD (no data or airtime needed)
If you do not have internet access, USSD lets you check from any phone. Dial the official SASSA USSD string published on the government site and follow the prompts. USSD is useful when data is unavailable, though it may be slower during busy periods.
What each result means
| Status | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | Your grant for that month is approved. | Look for a pay date. Make sure your banking details are verified. |
| Pending | Still being assessed (often DHA or bank checks). | Wait a few working days and recheck. See identity verification. |
| Declined | Not approved for that month. | You can appeal — appeals are month-specific. |
Staying safe from scams
Only use the official domains srd.sassa.gov.za and sassa.gov.za. Never share your PIN or OTP with anyone claiming to be SASSA — the agency will never ask for it. Ignore social-media accounts promising "faster approval" for a fee; the SRD grant is free to apply for and manage. For appeals, use the official Independent Tribunal page at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals.
Frequently asked questions
How long do status updates take?
Most updates reflect within a few working days. Identity (DHA) and banking checks can take longer during high-demand periods.
Can I check my status without internet or airtime?
Yes. Use the official USSD string published on sassa.gov.za and follow the prompts to view your result.
I am approved but there is no pay date yet. What now?
SRD is paid in staggered batches. Recheck after a few days and confirm your banking details are verified by OTP on the official portal.
My mobile number changed — can I still check?
First update your number on the official portal (see Change Phone), then use the website, WhatsApp, or USSD again.
Why your status changes each month
The most confusing thing about the SRD grant is that approval is not permanent. SASSA runs fresh checks every month against several databases — including your income, bank inflows, and other social grants — so a month you were approved can be followed by a declined month if any check flags something. This is normal and does not mean you did anything wrong. It is why we recommend checking your status early each month rather than assuming last month's result carries over. If a month is declined and you believe the check is wrong, you can appeal that specific month while continuing to receive payments for approved months.
The difference between the SRD portal and the main SASSA site
People often mix up two official addresses. The main agency website, sassa.gov.za, carries general news, office locations, and information about all social grants (Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, and more). The SRD-specific portal, srd.sassa.gov.za, is where you actually check and manage the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant — status, banking, phone number, and reapplication. For appeals, a third official address is used: srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals, run by the Independent Tribunal. Knowing which address does what saves a lot of wasted clicks, and using only these three keeps you clear of look-alike scam sites.
What to have ready before you check
Before you open the official portal, have your 13-digit South African ID number and the mobile number you used when you applied. The portal sends a one-time PIN (OTP) to that number, so if it has changed you will need to update it first — see our guide on changing your phone number. Keep your banking details handy too, because the most common reason an approved grant does not pay is that the payment method still needs to be verified.
