SASSA SRD Appeal: Step-by-Step Guide (ITSAA) for 2026
If your SRD R370 application shows Declined, you can appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). This page explains the process, common decline reasons, the evidence to prepare, and what to expect. This is an independent guide and is not affiliated with SASSA.
To check or manage your SRD grant, use the official South African government portal. This site does not collect your ID number, phone number, or any personal details.

Appeal when your SRD status for a month is Declined and you believe the reason is wrong or outdated, when your personal or financial situation changed and is not reflected in SASSA's checks, or when you corrected details (such as banking or phone) and still received a decline for that month. Appeals are month-specific — you must appeal for each month that shows Declined.
What you need before you start
Have your SA ID number (13 digits) and the mobile number used for your SRD application, plus the decline reason shown on your status (for example "Alternative Income Source Identified") and any supporting evidence. Useful evidence includes recent bank statements showing low or no income, a termination letter or UIF payout history if you are no longer employed, proof that NSFAS is not active if you were declined for that reason, and confirmation that you updated your banking or mobile details on the official portal.
How to submit an appeal (ITSAA)
Appeals are made to the Independent Tribunal, not to SASSA directly, and always on the official page:
- Open the official ITSAA page: srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals.
- Enter your ID number and the mobile number used for SRD.
- Select the month you want to appeal.
- Choose the decline reason and provide a clear explanation.
- Reference your supporting evidence and submit.
Common decline reasons and how to respond
If flagged for "Alternative Income Source Identified" but benefits ended or were never received, provide proof of termination or confirmation letters and appeal for each affected month. For "Pending DHA Verification" or "Identity Verification Failed", confirm your Home Affairs records are correct and explain any recent correction. For "Bank Details Pending", update your banking details on the official portal, verify via OTP, then recheck your status for a pay date.
FAQs
How long do I have to appeal?
Appeal as soon as you see a decline for a month. Treat each declined month separately.
Do I need to appeal every month?
Yes. SRD is evaluated monthly. If several months are declined for the same reason, appeal for each.
My appeal was successful but there's no pay date yet.
SRD pays in batches. Check again after a few days and confirm your banking details are verified.
Where can I get help in person?
Visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID.
Understanding why appeals are month-by-month
The SRD grant is assessed one month at a time, and appeals follow the same logic. If you were declined for three separate months, that is three separate decisions, and each one needs its own appeal. This surprises people who expect a single appeal to fix everything, but it exists because your circumstances can genuinely differ month to month — you might have had income in one month and none in another. When you appeal, you are asking the Independent Tribunal to relook at that specific month's decision in light of evidence you provide, so gather your evidence with the relevant month in mind.
Why appeals go to the Tribunal, not SASSA
An important detail many people miss is that SRD appeals are not handled by SASSA itself but by an independent body, the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), through the Department of Social Development. This separation exists so that the appeal is reviewed by someone other than the office that made the original decision. Practically, it means you submit your appeal on the appeals portal (srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals) rather than the normal SRD status page, and the outcome comes from the Tribunal. Sending your appeal to the right place is the first step to getting it heard.
Building a strong appeal
The strongest appeals are specific. Rather than simply stating that a decline is wrong, explain clearly why, and back it with evidence tied to the decline reason. If you were declined for an "alternative income source" that has since ended, a termination letter or bank statements showing no such income make your case concrete. If it was an identity mismatch you have since corrected, note the date you fixed it. The Tribunal is reviewing many cases, so a clear, evidence-backed explanation for the exact month in question gives your appeal the best chance.
